My name is Kelly Clayton, and I want to share with ANNnews readers a journey that began many years ago and has led me to where I am today: Quality Supervisor at Aernnova.
My first steps in the working world
My professional life began in a very different way than you might imagine. I worked as a dental prosthetics technician, physical therapist, assistant at a language and IT school, and assistant at an insurance office. Each of these experiences gave me valuable skills that, while seemingly unrelated, helped me develop a flexible mindset and a capacity for constant learning.
The leap into the aeronautical sector: a new world
In May 2006, I began my first steps in the aeronautical sector while studing a technical program in mechanics. I was fortunate enough to complete my first internship at Compoende Aeronáutica, a company that provides non-destructive testing (NDT) services. Initially, I worked translating aircraft maintenance manuals, but I quickly had the opportunity to specialize as an NDT technician. It was there that I learned about Aernnova do Brasil and began performing tests at their facilities.
A new chapter at Aernnova
In April 2008, I decided to take the next step and join Aernnova do Brasil, where I began my career as a quality inspector. I worked on various assembly lines, performing part inspection and helping implement non-destructive testing. Over the years, I had the opportunity to learn and grow, including an international experience in Kansas, USA, as well as implementing new processes and equipment.
A period of growth: from Technician to Quality Coordinator
Between 2011 and 2014, I was promoted to Quality Technician and actively participated in the development of procedures, audits, and process improvements. One of the key moments of my career was when I became involved in the AH Tailboom project, a project that allowed me to learn even more about the industrialization of products and processes.
Also, as a Level 2 NDT technician, I continued to enhance my knowledge and skills. In 2014, I was promoted to Quality Coordinator. Supervising quality inspectors, I was able to further develop my leadership and management skills, in addition to learning about teamwork and direct interaction with large-scale customers such as Embraer and Airbus Helicopters.
The challenge in Évora: a new beginning
In 2022, I decided to take a step into the unknown. I wanted something more, both professionally and personally. That’s how the opportunity arose to move to Évora, Portugal, and take on a new challenge in a larger company with a different culture. Now, a year and a half later, I’m a Quality Supervisor at Aernnova, responsible for supervising quality inspectors and engineers in the metal assembly of programs like Embraer’s Praetor.
A challenge and an opportunity
This new challenge has undoubtedly been one of the greatest of my career. Leading a team of 25 people has been an enriching experience that has allowed me to learn, adapt, and try new things every day.
I am convinced that, with everyone’s efforts, we can continue improving our processes and maintain Aernnova’s status as one of the best companies to work for.
